Week 3

Doritos exercise

Lalin exercise

Week 4
Ripple tool exercise
Use ripple tool to edit Lalin video down to 50 seconds and add music.

Emo soap exercise
This one was a bit hard to cut down. I struggled to make it 40 seconds without cutting too much of the story.

Project 2 - Zach King tricks

Select a Zach King trick/video for Project 2 (With Know how)..

Zach does a lot of videos that have food in them. I watched this compilation of his food related tricks  and decided that I might want to do something along those lines.

I then found some tutorials on some of his food tricks:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gO4QrGJIGxE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJh0M8PZDrA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDaAAeQ6BRs

I like watching drink making videos, so maybe I'll find a way to combine the concept of these with Zach King tricks

Project 3

3 favourite stop motion videos.
I thought that the use of watercolour in this was really cool.
This video is actually a PSA about planting seeds. I liked the cardboard set design and the inclusion of the hand that planted the seeds . I also liked the choice of lighting colour.
Included this one cause I'm considering using clay for my video. Also Pingu is one of my favourite childhood cartoons. hehe

Choose not more than 3 PSA topics for final project.
  • Mental health
  • Overworking
  • Social media
Chosen topic: Overworking

Rough idea just so I can figure this out:
Act 1: Candle goes to to school, studies hard late at night, gets lots of good grades and is applauded for it.
Act 2: Candle continues to work hard and the cycle repeats. The candle is constantly applauded for it's work, and fails to notice that it is melting further and further.
Act 3: The candle is in an exam hall and stares at the paper, not knowing what to do. The candle burns out completely.

"It's ok to take breaks,
don't work too hard,
you might burn yourself out."

Ideation: 1-2 paragraphs (The story is about ___. The theme of the story is ___. )

The story is about overworking in school and the theme is burnout (exhaustion from overworking), and uses imagery of a candle as a character to visualise the metaphor of burning out. The story follows the candle's hard work and shows applause coming from an audience. The existence of an audience implies both meanings of the word "performance": the first being the process of doing a task (the student/candle is studying), the second meaning being the act of performing a dramatic role(the student/candle wanting to play the role of a model student).

3 Act Structure: Describe the story in 3 act structure:

Act 1:
Once upon a time there was a candle.
Every day, the candle worked very hard in school.
Until One day the candle was applauded for it's efforts and success.
Act 2:
Because of that, the candle decided to work even harder.
Because of that, the candle's flame began burning faster.
Because of that, the candle became shorter and shorter as it kept working.
Act 3:
Until finally, the candle burnt out during an exam.
And ever since then, it couldn't keep living.

The Moral of the story is to not overwork yourself.

UPDATED ACT STRUCTURE WITH NEW STORY AND MORAL

This was done based on week 7 feedback that plot needs to be short enough to fit 30 seconds. The general story was changed slightly and the moral of the story has also been changed.

UPDATED ACT STRUCTURE WITH NEW STORY AND MORAL

Act 1
A candle is surrounded by people in darkness, but nobody pays attention to it. The candle is sad.
The candle lights up, then people see it and start clapping. the candle is happy to be seen.

Act 2
The candle burns brighter. People love it. People applaud the candle.
The candle is happy from it's efforts being well received.

Act 3
The candle burns out. The audience stops clapping and are upset. They leave, the candle is alone.

Message: don't push yourself just to please others.

Inspiration

Storyboard & Finalised Art Direction:

The feedback I got for the sound in the animatic was to make the second scene have a more fierce sounding fire, to go with the candle flame being bigger.

Draft

I didn't get much feedback on the sound here as I hadn't completed it yet, but for the video part, Mr Martin suggested that I use an adjustment layer with a mask rather than use a shape layer with a gradient to create the effect of light and darkness.

Reflection

Week 1

A bit sad that due to the corona virus we can't be on campus and won't get to try out all the cool video and sound equipment :^(
