Information Design (Final Project)

Week 1

My group got assigned the topic "Water" and we decided to make our animated infographic about water pollution. We researched our topic then summarised it to write the narrative, all of which we did in a Google Doc together.

Week 2

Wrote narrative and made mood board for our video.

We struggled a bit with the narrative due to our 3 minute time limit, and had to be careful with what we cut out; too little and the video would be too long, too much and the informative aspect of the video is gone.

Moodboard

Week 3

Created our storyboard.

Week 4

Created the animatic (visuals by Yaman, narration by Jing Wen)

Week 5

Yaman and Mia created assets for the video.

We kept all our project files in one Google Drive folder to make it easier for everyone in the group to access and retrieve the assets and sound files.

Week 6

We planned to begin animating this week, but before that we had to organise the layers in the illustrator files for our assets.
We listed out the timings for each scene based on our narration so that me and Farissa could animate the scenes accordingly.

Week 7

Animating. That's all for this week. Animating.

It's a wonder that my laptop is still alright.

Week 8

Wrapped up my half of the animation, and added Farissa's scenes to the final video as she finished them individually. On Sunday before submitting, Jing Wen added sound effects to the video.

Feedback

Week 1
Make sure to pick a target audience before beginning to plan the narrative of the video
Week 2
Sir thought our moodboard was good.
Week 3
Make sure your storyboard clearly explains what is going to happen in the video
Week 6
Not really feedback, but Mr Shamsul (and Mr Asrizal who happened to be around) laughed at our first scene.

Reflection

Week 5- I fear not having the time to finish everything on time since this project is due during week 7 and there isn't much time to animate since we're away this week.
Week 7- I worry a little bit about how cohesive our video will stylistically appear overall; we seem to be on the same page mostly, but when you look at certain things right down to the little details, it's a bit noticable that it's done by different people. Am I thinking about this too much?

[Final Reflection]

Very pleased to admit that I'm quite proud of our work ! The group was great to work with and everyone contributed and worked together really well. The habit we developed of messaging our group chat during class to discuss the project instead of just speaking aloud is still something I laugh about. The only real issue we faced was the week that four out of five of our group members were in Tokyo for the intercultural design module, leaving us  pressed for time, and leaving Yaman..... alone in class. XD

If there's anything I could have changed about our final video, it would be to have consolidated our art and video style more. The way we had split the work was to have 2 people make the first half of the video (1 illustrator and 1 animator), 2 people doing the second half, and the final member adding the audio. This was definitely a good idea in terms of the workload, but we did go back and forth a little bit trying to make the second half appear the same as the first half. Maybe this would have been more efficient if both halves were made concurrently, so that we could check in on the other half along the way, but due to the time constraints, that wasn't possible.

In reference to what I wrote in my week 7 reflection, I feel that I really did (and still am) thinking too much about this, but hey, it goes to show that that was the only thing about this project that bothered me :')

Thanks to my group members for all the hard work (and memes), and to Mr Shamsul for the After Effects tutorials. My final takeaway is that after taking part in the animation work for this video, I do want to learn more about motion graphics.
